On November 14,
2008 a series of brush fires occurred in Sylmar, known as the "Sayre
Fire," causing the destruction of at least 630-structures including
approximately 500-mobile homes. On November 26, 2008 the Los Angeles
County Health Officer and Director of the California Office
of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA) stated that
"There is an immediate threat to the public health due to toxic
materials being present in burned debris on public and private
property." This statement and other emergency declarations by the
State and County agencies "...called for the immediate debris
removal, emergency measures and prompt hazard
mitigation." | |
